Windmill of dust

Windmill of dust

Mars is a dusty place and you might not think it is surprising that we regularly see dust storms on its surface. But the phenomenon has puzzled scientists since the 1980s when experiments showed that typical wind speeds recorded on Mars are not strong enough to lift the dust.

Many theories have been suggested to explain the dust storms but few experiments have investigated them.

This experiment was designed by four students from the university of Duisberg-Essen in Germany as part of their thesis project. It will fly on ESA’s parabolic flight campaign that offers repeated 20 seconds of weightlessness.

Inside the canister is a small wind channel filled with carbon dioxide at low pressure to represent the atmosphere found on Mars. The canister spins like a centrifuge and recreates different levels of gravity – the faster it spins the heavier the contents will be. This experiment cannot be done on the ground because the team wants to recreate Mars gravity – around two thirds of gravity on Earth.

This experiment is part of ESA’s “Fly your thesis!” educational programme that offers university students a way to run experiments in weightlessness. Follow the teams’ progress on their own website.

Ténéré, Niger

Ténéré, Niger

The Ténéré region in north-eastern Niger is one of the hottest and driest regions in the Sahara desert, with average maximum temperatures above 40°C between May and September and average annual precipitation 20 – 25 mm. Due to the persistent high-pressure area that causes descending and drying air, the region is one of the sunniest on Earth, with the annual sunshine duration around 4,000 hours.

The region’s geography largely consists of planes with sand dunes (ergs) that are oriented perpendicular to the persistent north-easterly wind (Harmattan). The area also contains some oasis settlements, such as the city of Bilma. The 100 m image of 6 March 2016 shows the extensive sand dunes as yellow areas in the upper image part, with the sand and dust being transported towards the southwest, visible as faint feather-like structures.

Siberia blanketed in smoke

Siberia blanketed in smoke

Wildfires break out in the boreal forests of eastern Russia most summers, but 2016 has been particularly bad, with numerous blazes since July. This image, which was taken by the Copernicus Sentinel-3A satellite on 14 September, shows smoke billowing from a string of fires northwest of Lake Baikal in Siberia. These huge smoke plumes stretch over 2000 km. It is thought that drier conditions associated with warmer weather – this June being the hottest on record – have contributed to the unusually large number of fires.
